Elmar Barthen

Elmar Barthen was a kindly middle-aged shopkeeper. Lean and bearded, Elmar was the proprietor of Barthen’s Provisions with his the help of his son, Anders, and daughter, Thistle.

Born in 1431 DR, Elmar was one of the settlers who helped re-establish Phandalin in 1478 DR. His shop helped bring all manner of supplies and equipment for those wishing to build a life in the rugged frontier. During this time, Elmar struck up a firm friendship with Gundren Rockseeker whose excited forays into the hills around Phandalin made generous use of Barthen’s Provisions.

In Tarsakh 1488 DR, Gundren Rockseeker had made arrangements with Barthen to ship provisions from Neverwinter to Phandalin as the the dwarf prepared to join his brothers in the newly rediscovered Mines of Phandelver. However along the way, Barthen’s shipment, Gundren and his hired guards were captured by Cragmaw goblns. Luckily Gundren’s new hires, Adaven, Grey and Tarlach Malthar eventually managed to escape the clutches of the bugbear, Klarg, and return the supplies to Elmar.

On the night of Mirtul 23, Phandalin is assaulted by the a large raiding force that pillaged the town. However during the chaos, Elmar Barthen was captured by Langdedrosa Cyanwrath and used as a bargaining tool to get the Talons of Tresendar to emerge from the manner and face him in a duel. As Cyanwrath was battling the dragonborn warrior Grey “Hammerfang”, the half-dragon blasted Bathen with his electrical breath. In return, Grey slew Langdedrosa, but nothing could be done for Elmar Barthen.
